Job Summary

The research scientist will actively engage with the SPHEREx mission’s core science programs. They will be working with other members of the SPHEREx team on the development of the software pipeline, particularly the Extra-galactic Background Light modeling and interpretation pipeline.  More information about SPHEREx can be found at https://spherex.caltech.edu.

Essential Job Duties

  • The candidate will lead the interpretation of the galaxy formation theme for the SPHEREx mission. 
  • They will develop the infrastructure pipeline required to interpret the SPHEREx extra-galactic background light measurements.
  • In particular, the candidate will develop and validate a fast model which is adequate for full sampling of the associated likelihood function and discuss its multiple possible interpretations. 
  • The candidate is expected to be fully integrated in the SPHEREx science team, collaborate closely with other team members and to mentor more junior members
  • Expertise in modeling and interpretation of diffuse background light measurement, epoch of reionization, diffuse backgrounds, cross-correlations, cosmological simulations, and pipeline development is especially valued. 
  • Make informed prioritization decisions on pipeline
  • Mentorship and project supervision of graduate students and other project members

Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent) in astrophysics, cosmology, or a related field.
  • 3 years of related experience.
  • Proven track record of research excellence demonstrated through publications and projects.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong record of original research in large-scale structure or cosmology and SkySimulator.
  • Demonstrated experience in software development for scientific analysis.
