Position Overview

A postdoctoral research associate (or postdoctoral fellow) position is available in the Life After Sport Trajectories (LAST) Laboratory, directed by Jacob J. Capin, PT, DPT, PhD, MS, in the Department of Physical Therapy. The LAST laboratory (www.lastlab.org) is investigating long-term health in athletes by evaluating strength, function, cardiometabolic indicators, physical activity, and dietary intake in male and female current athletes and midlife former athletes as well as non-athlete controls. The laboratory is funded through Marquette University funds as well as an NIH Director’s Early Independence Award, DP5-OD031833 (https://reporter.nih.gov/search/zrvO6K1hkE2ue5ADGGGpag/project-details/10253367).

This large clinical study is in the final stages of data collection; many products (i.e., peer-reviewed publications and presentations) are anticipated in the coming months and years, and the successful postdoctoral fellow will have a great opportunity to be involved in scholarly productivity. The laboratory is also launching a new clinical trial investigating pain in former athletes, master’s athletes, and nonathletes; the postdoctoral fellow will assist in launching this study and in data collection and analysis for this study.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to write peer reviewed publications, assist in launching a new clinical trial, collect and analyze data, assist with recruitment and scheduling research participants, assist with mentoring student researchers in the lab, submit for independent funding (e.g., NIH fellowships and/or foundation fellowships), and participate in other lab-related activities as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The competitive applicant will be a highly motivated research scientist with a history of research productivity (peer-reviewed publications and presentations), experience working with human research subjects, and a PhD or ScD (or equivalent) in rehabilitation science, sports medicine, kinesiology, exercise science, exercise physiology, nutrition, behavioral medicine, psychology, biomedical engineering, cardiovascular physiology, epidemiology, data analytics, statistics, or a related field. Experience in data management, statistical analysis, and scientific writing is required.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Exceptional candidates will possess one or more of the following: clinical degree in physical therapy, athletic training, medicine, nutrition, nursing, or occupational therapy; history of funding and desire to pursue extramural funding; experience in physical activity monitoring, dietary analyses, strength testing, and/or functional performance testing; and/or expertise in data analysis and statistical analysis.
